Hedgehogs are a delight to observe in our garden spaces, and they bring with them an appetite for slugs amongst other things, so definitely a welcome presence for gardeners!
Sadly hedgehog numbers are plummeting fast due to a general reduction in hedgerows and an increase in intense agricultural practices. Hedgehog numbers have declined 30% in the last 10 years.
Gardens have become really important habitat for hedgehogs. Hedgehogs can roam as far as 2km in a single night so creating corridors for hedgehogs is really important. Creating a small hedgehog hole in or under your fence or gate will give them access to your garden and a route onto other gardens.
Creating a nesting site for hedgehogs is an important step if you want to encourage these spiky visitors in. I make hand made hedgehog homes that can fit nicely in the right place in your garden. Even a simple leaf and log pile can be an ideal hibernation place for hedgehogs.
Having a generally wildlife-friendly garden will make hedgehog visits much more likely as it will create an abundance of all the tasty treats they like - beetles, earthworms and woodlice!
